Modelling a Pair of Shops

About three weeks ago I posted some images of the pub which I had built for the railway, so close on the heels of that post is this one talking about building the shops which will be on the other side of the road.

This is all part of the work for the section of the railway which includes the country station, the signal box and the level crossing. Of course with a level crossing comes a road and typically a road by a station has buildings on it. On the far side of the road behind the level crossing will have the signal box and pub on one side, but on the other will be a pair of shops.

Similar to the pub they are built from the Scalescenes designs, taking the base from the terraced houses and adding the shop fronts from the corner shop kit. However I’ve done a few bits of customisation, particularly around the design of the second shop, to make it fit what I wanted.

As with the pub I’ve had some limitations of the space available, but actually found that the standard model which makes two shops/houses actually fitted the space really well, the only compromise to fit is that it really should of had another thick end wall which includes chimneys on the far end. Space as not allowed for this, but unlike the pub where I had to take a piece of roof off to fit, the shops did not need this so are more intact.

Some photos during construction:

I had added some LEDs in both the shops an a couple of the upstairs rooms, so the aim eventually will be that, along with the pub and signal box, they can be illuminated. While I’ve tried to test these during construction it’s quite hard to get the proper effect there, so looking forward to one day getting them wired in on the layout properly.

The next piece of work is to build a small base for both buildings using 3mm MDF, and then go back to finish off the road and level crossing. I’ve also got a few street lights to add, so hopefully this should all come together and look effective.

In the mean time a few photos of the finished model:
